About this book
Introduction to Sally is by the author of Elizabeth and Her German Garden. Mr. Pinner is described as a God-fearing man, who was afraid of everything except respectability. The text says Mr. Pinner married Mrs. Pinner when they were both twenty. Jocelyn, wild with fear lest others should carry the girl off before he did, proposed through Mr. Pinner, saying I want to marry your daughter.
The text says that manners were manners, that they had to be inside one as well as out, and that there was no good saying Excuse me, Pardon, and Sorry if inside you were thinking rude. The Duke is surprised at the difference his guest's not being in the room made.
