About this book

Izaak Walton's quiet pursuits unfolded across an unsettled century, from Elizabeth's reign to that of Charles II. Andrew Lang traces the known events of his life, drawing on earlier biographers and records of family, trade and friendship. Walton appears as a London shopkeeper, a poet and a devoted friend of John Donne and other clergy. Lang also recounts his part in returning a royal jewel to the king, an unusual adventure for a man remembered through his fishing and writing.

Alongside this biographical account, Lang examines the character expressed in Walton's biographies and The Compleat Angler. His introduction connects literary interests with older and newer fishing practices, while considering Walton's religious convictions and his reports of dreams and visions. Attention to the reliability of such stories gives the essay a questioning edge. It offers useful context for readers interested in Walton's temperament, friendships and place in English literary history.

About the author

Andrew Lang

The Blue Fairy Book of 1889 did well enough for Longmans, Green to keep the series running for a quarter of a century, and Andrew Lang put his name to twenty-five volumes, The Yellow Fairy Book among them in 1894. Much of the labour was his wife's.
