About this book

The Valet’s Tragedy, and Other Studies is a volume of studies in secret history by Andrew Lang. The contents list The Mystery of Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey, The False Jeanne D’Arc, Junius and Lord Lyttelton’s Ghost, and The Mystery of Amy Robsart. One study names Count Mattioli, the secretary of the Duke of Mantua, as the other candidate for the honours of the Mask.

The text says that Mattioli was kidnapped on Italian soil on May 2, 1679, and hurried to the mountain fortress of Pignerol. Another study says that documents appear, letters from and to Dudley at the time of the event, which are totally inconsistent with guilt on his part. A further study says the familiar salutation was not introduced by Bacon; it was the very first formula which a writer of an English-French phrase-book translated into French ten years before Bacon made his notes.

The Blue Fairy Book of 1889 did well enough for Longmans, Green to keep the series running for a quarter of a century, and Andrew Lang put his name to twenty-five volumes, The Yellow Fairy Book among them in 1894. Much of the labour was his wife's.
