About this book

A boy in New York chooses a cat partly because his father keeps praising the benefits of owning a dog. The decision follows an argument over a record bought with babysitting money, and it brings a striped stray from Kate's apartment into a household already tense with quarrels and worries about his mother's asthma. Kate, a neighbor who takes in cats and speaks her mind, offers the boy a place to cool down when home becomes too noisy.

Emily Neville gives this children's novel a conversational first person voice, full of quick replies and observations about adult behavior. The city appears through apartment stairs, street games, shops, and familiar neighbors. When the boy suggests a possible job for Tom, whose father has left him, his own father takes practical steps to help. These everyday encounters give readers a story about family disagreements, friendship, and learning to see adults as individuals.
