About this book

The children of Jefferson Square turn their daily games into a campaign of teasing against an elderly worker they call Paddy. In this short children's novel, Evelyn Snead Barnett places their comfortable homes beside a common strewn with rubbish, a convent and the small cottage where Jerry cares for his wife, Peggy. The opening also shows seven neighbourhood children being shut out of games because their parents lack social standing.

Against that setting, a planned burglary brings Jerry into contact with the police, while concern for Peggy draws him back to the cottage. The story combines an anxious incident with a clear interest in how people treat neighbours whose lives they barely know. Readers can follow its brisk scenes for the suspense, or notice how childish cruelty and social pride sit alongside the patient work of caring for someone in pain.
