About this book
It Takes Practice Not To Die is a book by Elizabeth Bartlett, originally published in 1964 in Santa Barbara, California. A run of capitalised headings includes, among others, REPLY TO CRITICS and THE GHOST OF ANNE FRANK. The text speaks of a substance inside that no one has yet identified or described as something natural to flesh, a glutinous secretion in the cells that can harden and melt.
A section headed BALANCE says "My head has no affinity with my feet" and that the speaker reels to the floor when standing on one heel. The text says the mind goes back and forth and stops at what time stations, Monday morning, January 7th, winter, and ten years after then. A part headed ITEM: BODY FOUND recalls a silent evening and a star that pierced the air, leaped across the sky, slipped and fell.
