About this book
Italian Alps is by Douglas William Freshfield and carries the line Sketches in the Mountains of Ticino, Lombardy, the Trentino, and Venetia. A passage on Bignasco says that the greater part of the population cluster closely under the hillside, where a long dull village street squeezed in between two rows of stone walls opens out here and there into a tiny square. The text says the well-to-do people of Val Maggia seem to be sensible of the charms of the spot where the waters of Val Bavona and the main valley meet.
An account of a descent says the writer’s party dropped down by a good path into the bottom of Val di Genova, which was reached in two hours from the pass. A passage on names says the Val di Brenta gives its name to the group, and that the point S. of the Bocca di Brenta is known as La Tosa throughout the country. The text says that the attention of the newly formed Trentine Alpine Society was called to the subject, and that the society promptly appointed a committee to inquire into and consider the local usage.
