About this book
Brittany, by S. Baring-Gould, is one of The Little Guides, a list that includes, among others, Cambridge and Its Colleges, Leicestershire and Rutland and Oxford and Its Colleges. A boatman is said to have been called up at the dead of night to convey passengers to the Ile de Seine; he heard a sound as of people entering his barque but saw no one. The Etang de Laoual is supposed to cover the cursed city of Is, and the text says the wrath of heaven was kindled and the sea overwhelmed the city.
At Goulien the guide notes a menhir 18 ft. high and remains of a Roman camp. A list of old windows names, among others, the Life of S. Armel, a Jesse tree that is called the finest of all, and the Last Supper. The text calls a church throughout flamboyant, except the west tower. The text says that as the insular power of the Britons was broken, the colonists considered themselves independent and acknowledged a loose and ill-defined submission to the Frank kings at Paris.
