About this book

Tent Life with English Gipsies in Norway is by Hubert Smith, with five full-page engravings, thirty-one smaller illustrations, and a map of the country, showing routes. The preface describes waking one morning to find the gipsies gone and the camp gone. The text names Noah and Zacharia and says their boots must be new, thick, and nailed, double and treble nailed.

The text says there are Norwegian gipsies, and that even Norway has been reached by wandering hordes of this singular people. At a bondegaard the party is offered ten or fifteen pounds of beef at ten skillings per pound, and buys ten pounds, paying four marks four skillings. The text says a cup is called the Luck of Muncaster, and that Muncaster Castle commands magnificent views over the valley of Eskdale in the picturesque county of Cumberland.
