About this book

A caption in the list of illustrations says that Alexander VI died by poison, which he and his son Cesare Borgia had prepared for a cardinal, who was invited to dine with them in their garden. Hadrian is described as a far-seeing and astute statesman and a good soldier who yet preferred peace to war, and the text says he visited Britain, and that the great wall between the Solway Firth and the Tyne was his work.

A passage describes Beatrice walking bravely to the scaffold reciting her prayers, and Giacomo being brought out blindfolded, his legs tied to the scaffold. The writer says there were many such underground prisons on the mainland, and that the writer has seen those of the castle of St. Elmo at Naples, now thrown open and dismantled.
