About this book
A. D. Bayne's History of Norwich, dated 1869 on its title page, sets out its plan as a survey of the city and its public buildings; civil and municipal history with lists of mayors and sheriffs; political history with election returns and members of Parliament; religious history with memoirs of bishops and deans; and commercial history drawing on prize essays on the manufactures and trade of Norwich.
In a passage on early Norwich, the Iceni are said to have called the place Caer Gwent, which the Romans altered to Venta Icenorum, and Northwic is explained as a northern station on a winding river. Norwich Castle is said to have been built in the reign of Uffa, the first king of the East Angles. Other pages quote J. J. Gurney answering commissioners about local elections, and give hospital figures, including 56,828 in-door patients from the opening in 1772 to January 1, 1868.
