About this book

Paul MacKendrick's book, dated 1960 and subtitled The Story of Archaeology in Italy, is dedicated to his wife. One passage describes a small underground chamber, less than thirty by thirty-six feet, with stucco decoration. The author links its scenes to the myth of Sappho and Phaon and to the neo-Pythagoreans, citing Pliny the Elder, and notes that the bones of a puppy and a suckling pig were found beneath the floor.

Other motifs he lists include a winged victory, a soul arriving in the Isles of the Blest, a woman with a flower and a scene of Demeter and Triptolemus, with other reliefs showing Marsyas and Apollo and the Danaids. A further passage lists what a ruler built or restored in Rome, including a forum, a mausoleum and an Altar of Peace, and says Rome changed from a city of brick to a city of marble. An index includes entries such as Balzi Rossi, Bologna and Bolsena.
