About this book
The Tortoiseshell Cat is by Naomi Royde-Smith. A scene follows a walk down West Hill and a tram to Clapham Junction, taken so as to go the longest way round on the way home to tell Lilac. The text says Mrs. Barraclough spent a good deal of time in winking at things which were not strictly within the order of the Club, but which did not disturb its peace. Mrs. Barraclough tells Miss Armstrong that it is about the Countess she has to talk, and that the Countess has complained of Miss Armstrong.
The text says Heinrich himself had never come out of the mood, but had sat, a shadow among shadows, in the darkness round the model-throne, plucking fragments of melancholy airs out of his violin while they said good-night. The text says two hundred hymn-books made a black pyramid outside the Hall door and, when the note was struck, two hundred voices raised as one sang in the clear cold tones of early youth.
