About this book

Published in 1928 and dedicated to Woolf's lover Vita Sackville-West, this playful mock-biography follows a young Elizabethan nobleman who lives for more than three centuries and, halfway through, wakes as a woman. Orlando moves through the court of Elizabeth I, a great frost on the frozen Thames, an embassy in Constantinople, and finally the modern age, aging only a few decades across all of it. Woolf uses the fantastical premise to poke fun at the conventions of biography and to question how much of gender is costume and social expectation. Witty, affectionate, and unusually light for her, it doubles as a love letter and a sweeping tour of English literary history. Free PDF and EPUB edition available.
