About this book
James Nasmyth, Engineer is presented as an autobiography, with an editorial preface recalling a request for information about Nasmyth's mechanical inventions. The family account describes masters and workmen living in mutual harmony, with an attachment extending through many generations and homes close to the workshops.
The account of workshop training says that lads who excelled received an extra weekly wage and became skilful mechanics as they took pride in the quality of their work. The account of employment says every lad was free to leave at the end of each day's work, making mutual interest the only bond. The description of a flexible joint for steam and water pipes identifies completely enclosed packing as the chief novelty making the joints permanently watertight.
