About this book

The Slide Valve, Simply Explained is by W. J. Tennant, revised and much enlarged by J. H. Kinealy, who is listed as Professor of Mechanical Engineering in Washington University. The contents list names chapters on The Simple Slide, The Eccentric a Crank and Note on Link Motions, among others. The introduction to the American edition says there is no more important part of the steam-engine than the valve, the part which determines when and for how long the steam shall be admitted to the cylinder.

The writer says that Fig. 36, which concerns the reversal of an engine in motion under steam, will probably have a special interest to students of the locomotive. Under Free Exhaust, the text says that to give the exhaust steam as free a passage as possible it is customary to make the steam-ports wider than the amount to which they are open to steam. The text asks why we have had to employ reversing gear, and speaks of an engine that, let us assume, has been reversed without our knowledge.
