About this book
Small differences of manners and motive are the focus of W. H. Helm's study of Jane Austen. He reads her fiction through the squires, clergymen, officers and families who occupy Georgian parlours, parks and shrubberies. Comparing her approach with those of Balzac and Charlotte Brontë, he considers how domestic scenes reveal character and how readers judge a novelist's range. His discussion makes the scale of Austen's social world a central question of literary criticism.
Published in 1909, the book examines literary influences, style, satire, ethical ideas and Austen's place in English literature. Its contents also include her letters, household interests and the relation between the novelist and her characters. A passage on marriage explores financial security and the objections some earlier readers raised to Austen's treatment of courtship. Readers studying her novels can use Helm's arguments to connect their comedy with the social expectations he finds behind it.
