About this book
The Key to the Brontë Works, by John Malham-Dembleby, sets out to show the method of construction of the works of Charlotte Brontë and their relation to the facts and people of her life. The contents open with an outline of Charlotte Brontë's life. One chapter title covers the origin of the foundling Heathcliffe and his name in Wuthering Heights and the origin of the insane lady and the white veil scene in Jane Eyre.
The text says that Charlotte Brontë was one of a family of six, whose mother died in 1821. The author says that Mrs. Gaskell in the main wrote her famous biography from letters and from the epistles of a class the author has previously mentioned. The text says that it is indeed astonishing how much M. Sue knew of Charlotte Brontë's private life, and that M. Sue told the world in 1850 of a West Indian girl being with Charlotte Brontë at the Clergy Daughters' School.
