About this book

Jane Austen's familiar characters belong to a world of coaches, clerical households and social customs that G. E. Mitton sets out to recover. Published in 1905, this biography places Austen's life within the England she knew, asking how fiction rooted in an earlier society can still feel so immediate. Mitton pays particular attention to Austen's comic observation of human behaviour and to the everyday details that her novels often leave unstated.

Chapters on Steventon, Bath, Southampton and Chawton sit alongside discussions of letters, the post, travel, the navy and dress. The literary background matters too: Austen's sharp comments on Mary Brunton's Self Control and Sarah Burney's Clarentine appear beside accounts of circulating libraries and the books then in fashion. Readers interested in the surroundings of Austen's fiction will find a mix of personal history, social description and criticism, with her own reading tastes offering another way to understand her standards as a novelist.
