About this book
In Japanese Homes and Their Surroundings Edward Sylvester Morse describes the Japanese objects that appeared in his country within twenty years: lacquers, pottery and porcelain, carved ivory and fabrics in cloth and paper. He notes that their designs, at first puzzling, began to change how rooms, wall-papers and dishes were decorated, and he names the artists Coleman, Vedder and Lafarge.
In a later passage he describes a plank carved in relief with the leaves of an aquatic plant, in an old house, and remarks that small towns and villages in distant regions have skilled carvers. Pages near the close turn to the Loochoo or Riukiu Islands, now Okinawa, lying between southern Japan and Formosa, and cite Mr. Satow and Mr. Brunton on the islanders' language and buildings.
