About this book
Chats on Japanese Prints is by Arthur Davison Ficke. The text says the plebeian origin of the prints explains why the cultivated Japanese have not, as a rule, looked upon them with much enthusiasm. The text says that as late as 1861 it was possible for a writer on Japan to regard Japanese prints with blank indifference.
The text mentions a rare little book by Captain Sherard Osborne, printed in London, called "Japanese Fragments," which contains six hand-coloured reproductions of prints. The text calls "The Six Tamagawa" a great six-sheet composition that is positively disturbing in the feeling of supernatural forces that it awakens. The text says several of the Tokaido Set have been imitated, rather poorly, and also some of the Birds and Flowers.
