About this book

Jerome Cardan: A Biographical Study is by W. G. Waters, and its title page is dated London, 1898. A line from Sir Thomas Browne about Cardan's ambition stands before the preface. In the preface Waters says he makes no attempt to treat the whole mass of Cardan's printed work historically, and turns instead to the writings that are autobiographical or that help form an estimate of the writer's genius and character.

One quoted first-person passage tells of a quarrel between the speaker's parents, a spell in the Franciscan brotherhood, and a move to the Gymnasium at Pavia, with lessons in music and dialectics mentioned along the way. The footnotes point to Cardan's own books, including De Subtilitate and De Varietate.
