About this book
Richard Wagner, Composer of Operas discusses music-dramas, the theatre, and the art of opera, whose music the introduction calls by far its most important factor. The introduction says all the ancient controversies about the merits or demerits of the music-dramas have died down. The account of theatrical work describes late performances, rehearsals and evening performances, with long waits between spells of monotonous work.
The discussion of articles describes A Pilgrimage to Beethoven as containing self-revelation, some conscious and some unconscious. The chapter headed The Dusk of the Gods says the work was composed in hot haste for the first Bayreuth festival. The chapter explains that the festival did not take place until some time after completion, although Wagner had anticipated an immediate performance.
