About this book

A heavenly messenger arrives at Tortosa to urge Godfrey toward Jerusalem, setting this epic poem's military action in motion. Godfrey gathers the Christian leaders, whose ambitions and loyalties give the campaign a personal dimension. Baldwin desires power, Tancred is troubled by love, and Rinaldo's restless courage seeks examples to follow. Tasso brings divine intervention, formal speeches and the concerns of individual knights into the same verse narrative.

Edward Fairfax's English translation was first published in London in 1600. Its rhymed stanzas carry scenes of council and combat as well as moments of argument between companions. Before an assault, Raymond urges Godfrey to guard his life, while Godfrey explains the vow that requires him to fight. Across the walls, Clorinda prepares her bow. The poem offers readers a close view of how faith, personal obligation and military leadership are expressed through epic storytelling.
