About this book
Poems from the Divan of Hafiz names Gertrude Lowthian Bell as translator and prints verses addressed to Hafiz, with songs of dead laughter, love once hot, a cup once rose-red with wine, and a rose whose beauty is forgotten. The prose account relates a tale in which inhabitants eagerly helped satisfy Abu Ishac’s wish for a great gate, digging foundations with spades of silver.
A poem addresses Hafiz as rising to Heaven’s gate from the tavern where he has tarried late, while telling him to bring the cup to the Judgment-seat. A lyric describes even bearers of diadems of might and empire as slaves of shining eyes, and describes lovers clad like violets in blue robes of woe. The notes report differing opinions about the forbidden fruit, mentioning an ear of wheat, a fig-tree, and a vine.
