About this book
At Sobrante ranch, Christmas approaches under a cloud of suspicion. Jessica learns from Aunt Sally that the men on the ranch believe Ephraim Marsh, their old companion known as Forty-niner, has stolen money. To Jessica, who remembers his generosity and weeks in hospital after an accident, the accusation is almost unthinkable. Evelyn Raymond sets Jessica, the Heiress among a household whose affection is tested by gossip, divided loyalties, and sudden alarms.
The novel places its mystery among everyday conversations and household concerns. Aunt Sally stitches patchwork, criticizes her son's conduct, and turns family history into brisk conversation, while Jessica questions the harsh judgments around her. Flowering porches, ranch roads, and the nearby settlement of Marion give the story a firm local setting.
