About this book

In John Bull on the Guadalquivir, a man says he is an Englishman and that, in the circumstances of his marriage, he became connected with the south of Spain. The text says the Pomfrets and Daguilars have long been in trade together, and one of the partners has usually resided at Seville for the sake of the works which the firm there possesses. The narrator says his father, James Pomfret, lived there for ten years before his marriage.

The narrator says he asked her to be Mrs. John Pomfret, and Miss Daguilar replied that she was not prepared with an answer; she had only known him six weeks, and wanted more time to think about it. The narrator says Maria had a quiet sustained decision of character quite unlike anything he had seen in English girls. A woman says to John, with the sweetest, prettiest smile, that we don’t do that here; only when people are married.
