About this book

A daughter's diary gives S. R. Crockett a second pair of eyes on family life in Sweethearts at Home. In the opening chapters, her father discovers that Sweetheart has kept a record accurate enough to correct his memories of their Swiss excursions. Their walks beside Lake Neuchâtel bring encounters with country hosts and a reunion with Madame Marie, whose habit of scolding him becomes part of the comedy shared between parent and child.

Sweetheart's own entries move into a world of siblings, friends, shops and changing loyalties. Hugh John intervenes when Nipper Donnan troubles Elizabeth Fortinbras, while another entry turns from that dispute to rainy weather, flooded grounds and the pleasures of books beside a winter fire. The novel's diary form makes room for small observations as well as family incidents. Its appeal lies in the different ways adults and young people remember, judge and tell the same everyday world.
