About this book
In La Mère Bauche, the Pyreneean valley in which the baths of Vernet are situated is described as not much known to English, or indeed to any travellers. The text says that in those days, by far the most noted and illustrious person in the village of Vernet was La Mère Bauche. La Mère Bauche was a native of the village who returned in her early widowhood to become proprietress and manager, or, as the text says, the heart and soul of the Hôtel Bauche at Vernet.
The hotel is described as a large and somewhat rough establishment for invalids who came to Vernet for their health, built immediately over one of the thermal springs. The text says Adolphe at that moment did feel that he should have liked to kick the capitaine out of his mother’s house. Madame Bauche suggests the hall of the bath-house as the place for a meeting, because they could walk round and round, and nobody ever went there at that time of day.
