About this book
Journal of an Overland Expedition in Australia is a book by Ludwig Leichhardt. The full title describes the journey as from Moreton Bay to Port Essington, a distance of upwards of 3000 miles, during the years 1844-1845. The work is respectfully and gratefully dedicated by the author to the generous people of New South Wales, among others.
The preface says the writer is under the greatest obligations to Captain P. P. King, R. N., who has not only corrected the manuscript but has added notes. An entry dated Oct. 8 records a tremendous thunder-storm during the night and says that, because the river was very winding, the party did not advance more than 7 or 8 miles W.N.W. The writer says that much, indeed the greater portion, of the journey had been occupied in long reconnoitring rides. The writer reports that the cattle were tired and thirsty and that nothing could be given to them to drink except about six quarts of brackish water, which fell to the share of the bullock.
