About this book

Water supplies and weary animals determine the pace of John McKinlay's account of the Burke Relief Expedition. Leaving Adelaide in August 1861, his party moves camels, horses, bullocks, sheep and stores through the interior of Australia. Dry lakes, broken sandhills and intense heat complicate the work of keeping men and transport together. Early entries describe missing companions returning exhausted after local people give them water, fish and guidance to camp.

Daily entries combine compass bearings and distances with observations of weather, plants and practical difficulties. In the later excerpt, boggy creeks force a change of route before a camp at Jeannie Lagoon. McKinlay also records boiling a leafy vegetable as a substitute for bread. The journal offers readers interested in exploration a close view of decisions about water, food and crossings, alongside the writer's colonial attitudes toward the people he meets.
