About this book
The account describes Washington’s efficiency and enthusiasm as a surveyor as qualities that were observed and admired. Lord Fairfax engaged George Washington to proceed with George William Fairfax, his agent, to execute commissions and meet a pressing demand. The account says the surveys and reports gave entire satisfaction and led to steady employment, principally in directing a land office and surveys preparatory to sale.
An editorial note identifies a draft letter to Anne, wife of Lawrence Washington, as very possibly made while surveying in the fall of 1748 or spring of 1749. A letter draft says that severe ague and fever prevented an expected visit and occasioned a return. A memorandum records charges and money lent, and includes a note about reading to the reign of K: John.
