About this book
After four days on a prairie train, Mary Carmichael reaches a small Wyoming town with a stage ride still ahead of her. A letter from Mrs. Yellett welcomes her to Lost Trail and discusses the children's textbooks. Marie Manning begins this Western novel with Mary's homesickness, concern about travel expenses and first encounters with a town slowly waking after a night of celebration.
The mood changes at a bleak frontier cabin, where Judith prepares supper for Peter and Alida anxiously waits for her husband. Flowers, a makeshift curtain and a lamp left at the window reveal Alida's efforts to make the sparse home welcoming. Hospitality persists alongside poverty and a sense of approaching danger. These scenes give readers both the comedy of arriving in unfamiliar surroundings and the strain of living in an isolated household, with particular attention to women's work, personal loyalty and the landscape around them.
