About this book
Mary Blake has won stage audiences, but Donald Van Loo Morris knows little about the woman behind her public name. Over supper after a closing performance, he presses the troubled actress to explain her anxiety and offers his help. Her guarded past, his affection and the attention of nearby diners give the opening of Lee Thayer's detective novel a strong sense of public fame meeting private uncertainty.
The investigation takes Peter Clancy beyond New York society to Hobart Falls, where he seeks a night's lodging with the elderly photographer Walter Lord. Their exchange adds small-town voices and practical travel problems to a story catalogued around missing persons and private investigators. Readers who enjoy mysteries built from conversations, concealed identities and ordinary details will find an actress's reserve and a detective's persistent questioning at the centre of this case.
