About this book

A treasured violin gives Marie a reason to leave the travelling troupe that has long controlled her life. When its leader threatens to hand her instrument to his daughter, she slips away and walks towards a New England village. There, her playing draws children and their neighbours into the street. Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards presents the young musician through her lively thoughts, her memories of Brittany and her close attachment to the violin she treats as a companion.

This short novel brings music, kindness and questions of personal freedom into a rural setting. While staying in Abby's care, Marie longs for open fields and a life free from other people's commands. Her hopes mingle with remembered village customs and a belief that the rising sun offers encouragement. Readers interested in childhood, belonging and the claims of marriage will find those concerns expressed through Marie's own wishes and observations.
