About this book
A veiled woman boards a train from London on a stifling June afternoon, buys a ticket for Crewe, and leaves the train at the quiet village of Redcliffe. Her hurried search for solitude gives Charlotte M. Brame's romance an opening full of distress and unanswered questions. The busy station, sunlit countryside and secluded cottage sharpen the contrast between her surroundings and her troubled state.
Elsewhere in the story, Marion Arleigh prepares to leave school for Thorpe Castle with her guardian and his newly married wife, Lady Ridsdale. A warm welcome brings fresh hope, but Marion has promised to take the governess Lyster as her companion. That commitment becomes difficult to reconcile with the household's wishes.
