About this book

Elaine introduces her family by comparing the stories they love. She prizes her brother Guy's company because they share an admiration for courage, honour and devotion. Their nurse Marguerite tells biblical and classical tales as accounts of knights and ladies, while Elaine's other siblings favour grand clothing, battles or practical matters. Emily Sarah Holt gives this historical novel a personal opening through Elaine's outspoken judgments about her family.

Religious conversation forms another part of the narrative. Lady Sybil questions Lady Judith about belief and conscience, and Judith warns that people may shape their idea of God around their own wishes. The preface considers suffering through the need for faith and patience. For readers interested in historical fiction with a strong religious purpose, the book brings family affections and disagreements into contact with arguments about humility, moral judgment and trust.
