About this book
A newborn child meets a father's cold rejection at the opening of George MacDonald's 1891 novel. Sir Wilton Lestrange has married Robina Armour, a blacksmith's daughter, whose attraction to his rank has helped bind them together. When she dies soon after giving birth, a nurse brings the baby to Sir Wilton and encounters his disgust. The scene establishes a household in which social standing and wounded pride compete with the care a child needs.
Christian belief runs through the personal conflicts of this British novel. Barbara Wylder talks with a parish clergyman about God's patience, the responsibilities of church leaders and the difference between preaching and private conversation. Their shared interest in books leads into verses about a dog. Readers interested in MacDonald's religious thought can see how he places arguments about faith beside questions of kindness, family duty and the value of living creatures.
