About this book

At Brookside, news of a Civil War draft sounds exciting to Robert Alston, who imagines the pleasure and glory of soldiering. His uncle asks him to consider the families and livelihoods that men may have to leave behind. Kathie listens with a different kind of concern, and the family discussion turns toward courage in daily conduct as well as courage under fire. Amanda M. Douglas builds this children's novel around those competing ideas of service and duty.

Kathie's own responsibilities appear in quieter choices. At fourteen, she talks with her mother about generosity, education and the difference between material comfort and a satisfying home. Her wish to keep writing to Sarah, a girl with few books and little schooling, makes kindness a practical matter. Christian teaching shapes these conversations, while worry over Mr. Meredith brings uncertainty into the household. Readers find a family story that connects wartime patriotism with patience, sympathy and ordinary acts of care.
