About this book
Lancashire Sketches is by Edwin Waugh and is marked as the third edition. The preface to the first edition speaks of a volume relating to a district with which the writer is intimately acquainted, and says the writer has gathered up a few points of local interest and has endeavoured to embody something of the traits of present life in South Lancashire with descriptions of its scenery. The text says a chapel was founded above five centuries ago by the monks of Furness, who prayed daily for the safety of the souls of such as crossed the sands with the morning tide.
The text says the Priory of Conishead was charged with the maintenance of guides across an estuary which is perhaps the most dangerous part of the Morecambe Sands. The text asks how many political essays, and lectures, and election struggles, would it take to produce the humanising effect which the song, "A man's a man for a' that," has awakened. One speaker tells of hearing the cap'en o' the fairies, with the whips cracking and horns blowing.
