The book presents a wayfarer's notes on Lancashire and Cheshire, described on the title page as historical, legendary, genealogical, and descriptive accounts of the palatine counties. The account says that Beeston occupies comparatively little space in the kingdom's chronicles during a period of a hundred years or more when the land had rest.
Kelly is described as a notorious alchemist and necromancer long before Dee became associated with him, an intimacy characterized by the account as unfortunate. The account says Kelly also acted as amanuensis and seer, looking into the doctor's magic crystal to supply revelations from the spirit world.
