About this book

Edward Sapir's Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech aims to give a perspective on language rather than a pile of facts. Its preface says the book links language to thought, history, race, culture and art, and hopes to be useful to students of linguistics and to the wider public.

In one passage he argues that speech is an overlaid function: the lungs, larynx, palate, tongue, teeth and lips all serve it, but none was developed for speech alone. Another passage works through an example of a word that can mean either "fire in the house" or "burn in the house," showing how a root can be made into a noun or a verb. He also notes that in many languages aspect matters more than tense.
