About this book
Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers is by W.E. Aytoun, and the volume is respectfully inscribed by the author to the Earl of Eglinton and Winton. The volume is a verbatim reprint of the first edition (1849). The contents list includes, among others, Edinburgh after Flodden, The Heart of the Bruce and The Burial March of Dundee, and under miscellaneous poems Blind Old Milton, Hermotimus and Oenone.
One poem shows people seeing in battered harness only one hard-stricken man and asks whether that can be Randolph Murray, Captain of the city band. A poem describes a company with the lines "No one of all that company But bore a gentle name" and says they had marched with great Dundee. Fair Oenone laments, weeping ever, weeping low, on the holy mount of Ida.
