About this book
Some Specimens of the Poetry of the Ancient Welsh Bards, by the Rev. Evan Evans, is translated into English, with explanatory notes on the historical passages and a short account of men and places mentioned by the bards. One poem is addressed to Myfanwy Fechan of Castell Dinas Bran and composed by Howel-ap-Einion Lygliw, a bard who flourished about a.d. 1390. The speaker of the poem says that he laments his absence from the marble castle of Myfanwy.
A speaker calls to a cup-bearer that the shares of mead are to be given equally before the bright shining tapers. A writer tells the person addressed to make poetry and antiquity branches of study, and asks if there is any hope of seeing the Llyfr Coch o Hergest. A note on the guards of Mynyddawc Eiddin says they were famous for their loyalty and bravery and were reckoned among the three noble guards of the kingdom of Britain.
