About this book

Knights, loyalty and conflict on Flodden Field provide the setting for Walter Scott's narrative poem in six cantos. Published in 1808, it places a tale of personal allegiances against the battle of 1513. Verse dialogue and descriptive passages give room to individual voices, including Constance's appeal to her judges. The poem also pauses for reflection, so its interest extends beyond the movement of the historical tale.

This edition includes an editor's account of Scott's life at Ashestiel, where literary work shared his days with riding, friendships and public duties. Introductions addressed to friends connect the poem with that personal world, and Thomas Bayne's notes discuss their place in the book. For readers interested in the meeting of history and poetry, Marmion offers both a verse narrative and material showing how Scott's relationships and surroundings entered his writing.
