Starlight becomes a source of measurable evidence in C. V. L. Charlier's lectures on the statistical study of the stars. Beginning with apparent brightness, colour, spectra, and position, he explains how observations can support conclusions about stellar distances, movements, and physical properties. Galactic coordinates organise the sky around the plane of the Milky Way, while discussions of parallax and units of distance show the practical choices behind astronomical measurement.
The lectures also introduce the catalogues and observatories that supply these measurements. Charlier credits work at Harvard and Lick, including Miss Cannon's classification of stellar spectra and W. W. Campbell's studies of radial velocity. He cautions that nearby, bright, or rapidly moving stars can be exceptional examples.
