About this book
William Carpenter challenges accepted astronomy through one hundred numbered arguments about the shape and movement of the Earth. His nineteenth-century pamphlet opens with a tribute to Samuel Birley Rowbotham and presents direct observation as the foundation of its case. Water levels, river courses, sailors’ charts, lighthouses and balloon ascents become material for Carpenter’s claim that the Earth is flat.
The short entries combine quotations from astronomers with objections to their reasoning. Carpenter questions explanations of the horizon, eclipse predictions and the apparent movement of the Sun. The sharp tone makes the pamphlet useful for examining how an advocate turns familiar sights into arguments against scientific authority. Read as a historical polemic, it offers a compact example of disputes over evidence, common sense and the methods used to explain the natural world.
