About this book
Stargazing: Past and Present was expanded from shorthand notes of a course of Royal Institution lectures with the assistance of G. M. Seabroke. The preface dates the course to 1870 and describes eight lectures on instrumental astronomy delivered at the Royal Institution. The discussion of Newton’s Optics describes its first proposition as an attempt to prove that light differing in colour differs in degree of refrangibility.
The account of eyepieces describes Dollond substituting a Huyghenian eyepiece for an eye-lens to produce his four-glass eyepiece. An alteration devised by Dr. Kitchener and made by Mr. G. Dollond is described as allowing the eyepiece’s power to be varied at pleasure. The discussion of observatory roofs includes a nearly flat roof sliding off the building and the more usual revolving dome with a slit down one side.
