About this book
Lectures on the French Revolution collects the lecture course given by Lord Acton, John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton, as Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge in the academic years 1895-96 to 1898-99. The prefatory note says the Revolution of 1789-95 was a special subject in those years. The volume was edited by John Neville Figgis and Reginald Vere Laurence and is dated 1910.
One passage traces how ideas of natural equality and the sovereignty of the people grew out of social ideas found in parts of Switzerland. Another says almost 300 people signed a protest that they would take no further part in the deliberations, and that the king's flight broke up the Conservative party and called the Republican party into existence, since he had left a manifesto behind. A further passage discusses Carlyle and the French pamphlets.
