About this book
The Popish Plot is a study of history during the reign of Charles II, with a discussion of a disputed death. The account describes the death of Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey as a mystery in English history whose circumstances have prompted widely differing opinions. The account notes that no evidence had yet appeared to connect anyone with the crime.
The discussion of the defence says that the accused were kept wholly unaware of the evidence to be produced against them. The political account describes a scheme of the Duchess of York to enlarge an English Carmelite convent at Antwerp, pressed upon the French court.
